Snow… Maybe

January 17th, 2004

The snow is coming down, although it looks like it is going to turn to rain later. Blah. I guess this isn’t going to be a great year for skiing. I was supposed to fly up to VT this weekend (as it is a long one) to go skiing, but couldn’t find a cheap ticket.

I had my third flying lesson yesterday, and the first one with less then 10kts of wind. I am starting to get the basics down, sort of… I can fly almost smoothly now. I guess that’s a good thing. Climbs are ok, but descents are sort of patchy right now.

Go figure. But anyhow, this past lesson was the first one where I actually had time to enjoy being in the left seat looking out. Hopefully that will continue.

FLYING!!!

So I got around to doing it! Yeah! My big ol’ internal hobbes meter went from 0 to 1.1! Of that time I spent very little of it at the controls, but still I learned SO much. And most of it I don’t remember at all. How funny is that. I go back for more on Monday. I can’t wait.

So my internal hobbes meter just went from 0 to 1.1! Wow. There was so much going on at once I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to grasp it all, let alone in the 12+ hours that my instructor wants me to solo in! Anyhow, we went up in a fairly nice (but defiantly not new) C172. The airport (4G7) is uncontrolled so we went over the importance of giving position reports and then we taxied out to the runway. I could not keep the front wheel on the line for the life of me and was weaving back and forth all over the place. After holding short my instructor took the the plane back and we took off and headed over to the practice area. Once there we did the standard straight and level, 30*, 45* and 60* turns, descents, climbs, slow flight, stalls, and yes EVEN spins. (He goes, “this is not really legal to do, but I want you to see how to get out of them”. Fair enough.) All I really did was hold a straight and level (well, it was straight but I was having trouble holding altitude) and the 30* turns.

Those went ok. I am going to assume that most of you had similar feelings of not comprehending what was going on during your first flight? I feel comfortable with learning, but it just seems like a lot at once. Round 2 starts on Monday and I am really looking forward to it.

I’m Back

January 7th, 2004

Well, that certainly wasn’t good. Somehow I sort of forgot to do anything to this for a while. Real fast update (sort of like those TVGUIDE 90 second life stories but I only need to cover about 5 months).

So, I got the job at the Hospital after about three months of trying. Turned out to be an really interesting experience. In a good way. The job just ended last month so I am back to looking for another one, although I still have my job at A&E. I also managed to get through one more semester at WVU. Fun fun.

So now I am heading down the home stretch with only one more semester to go. And the best part about it is that I only have to take 12 credit hours (4 classes). Very “bon”! (for those not in the know, “bon” is a French word for “good”…. I think.)

Anyhow, the point of all that is that I have time (and due to strange circumstances the money) to start flight lessons. SO… Today at 3PM I go into the wild blue yonder. Although right now it is rather a gray yonder. Fortunately the METAR for KMGW is showing that it should move out by then. We will see. So, until then….
