Getting Set

October 28th, 2005

Slowly moving in still. Yesterday was big money spending day (TV, DVD and table). Unfortunate, but watching DVDs on the big screen (well, 27 inches big) is so much better then on the laptop. The cable company can’t get over here until the second week of November to set up the cable and the broadband, so we are going to have to wait on that.

I’m in the middle of 3 days off right now. Yesterday, as I said was shopping day. Today is a shopping day as well. Food this time. And stamps if I can find a post office. I may go play ultimate tomorrow. There is a tourny at OU in Athens, but it is a 2.5 hour drive and we will be playing in costume so I don’t know how well that will work out. I guess I’ll decide later today. The theme for the team (hey, that rhythms) is Pac Man. We’ve got one guy building a pac man suit and everybody else is going as ghosts.

Pictures from last week:

Virginia/West Virginia Border heading from DCA to Hunstville, AL.

This is a tunnel on I77 between Bluefield WV and VA. I’ve driven that road WAY more then I have wanted to.

Lewisburg, WV. A good friend of mine lives down there.

Alaska Flight 3 from DCA to Seattle is cutting in front of us on runway 1 at DCA. It is really a flying gas can at this point.

Hot Reserve

October 21st, 2005

I got stuck with (somewhat intentionally) hot reserve today. Blah. There’s nothing like sitting in the crew room for 9 hours waiting for scheduling to call (or not call). The downside (well, one of the many downsides) is that I had to be here at 5, which meant getting up at 4. I wasn’t sure if I would make it in an hour but I actually got to the parking lot at 4:50. Efficiency at its best.

I am hoping that I don’t get a trip today, and that I get a late reserve time (preferably with no call out) tomorrow so I can play in an ultimate tourny. I actually requested that hot reserve today, as in theory, I have less of a chance of getting a multi day trip. Or at least, thats how I am looking at it. Time will tell.

If I do manage to play tomorrow it is supposed to be cold and raining. Fun fun. The team I am playing with (University of Dayton) is pretty inexperienced, but it seems that the compitition out here is as well so it shouldn’t be a problem. There are a whole lot of people at the practices (around 25 or 30) so PT may be an issue. There doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of interest in actually playing during practice, so that may transfer over to the tourny as well.

In theory only 3 and one half hours to go on this reserve shift. Let’s see… if I can burn another 45 min typing/cleaning up stuff for the site, 30 min doing something else, 20 min going and getting lunch and coming back and then 20 min eating it… that leaves me… well, you do the math.

DC

October 17th, 2005

Sitting in the hotel waiting for the shuttle to the airport. Fun stuff. I was given a 3 day trip right off of hot reserve, which was sort of sucky because it meant I only had about 5 hours of sleep that night. Yesterday was a deadhead to PIT and then PIT-BOS-PIT-PVD-DCA. Windy as all heck all day. made life interesting to say the least. Ok, the shuttle is here. Another fun filled day begins.

Today we go DCA-HSC-DCA-SDF-LGA. Who would have thought we provide direct service between Louisville and NYC?

Fayetteville

October 16th, 2005

Today is day 2 of a 4 day. Really a 3.5 day as we are done at 9am on the last day. Yep, that means early shows. Day one wasn’t too bad. DAY-PHL-Knoxvile-DCA-Huntsville. The hotel in HSV is right in the airport so when we got in at 8pm we got subs at Subway and then walked to our rooms. Not bad for a short overnight but I wouldn’t want to be stuck there for a long one. We showed at 5am and headed back up to DCA (through some nasty weather) to turn right back around to HSV. Fun Fun. It was the captain’s leg going back down and he had about 60 knots of wind through 1000 feet and about 15 by the time we go to the runway. Yep, most almost be winter again.

We then flew from HSV to Charlotte and then on to Fayetteville. The 20 minute flight was a nice change from the 1+ hour legs we’d been doing. The hotel here is ok and it has internet. (HSV did as well but I didn’t have a cat5 cable). For dinner I walked across the street to Shoney’s. The turkey club and onion rings I had were actually pretty good. The funny thing was that I was the youngest person in the place by probably 45 years. It was dark by the time I left and as I am running across the 4 lane (plus suicide lane) street to get back to the hotel I realize I am wearing black pants, a gray fleece and black shoes. Not the best thing to be playing in traffic at night in. But, I made it.

Tomorrow is a 4 leg day with a Nashville turn out of Charlotte and then we head up to Allentown, PA. Just like the Billy Joel song. Then an early show on the last morning getting us into Dayton at 9:30am.

Moving

October 12th, 2005

I finally got my relocation days so I am in process of moving from Amherst to Dayton. Right now I’m in Akron overnight. I did about 9 hours today which leaves only 3 or so tomorrow. That and unloading the whole van. At least I will be in my own place then. Good stuff.

Tired with a BIG “T”

October 1st, 2005

I passed my line check this afternoon. A flight down from Columbus OH to Charlotte. It didn’t go great, but it did go. I’m way too tired to talk about it now. The leg was the last of a 5 leg day that ended up being about a 13 duty hour day. More later I guess, but for now, SLEEP!
